“Time is of the essence. We must not delay. Together, we can solve the problem of hunger in SVG”.

Dr. Ralph Gonsalves

Prime Minister, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

On January 11th, 2016, Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, proposed that the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, establish a Zero Hunger Trust Fund which should “know all the relevant details and material circumstances of each person who goes to bed hungry at nights”. The Prime Minister further stated that we must: “Draw up a programme with several prongs: Education and training; health and wellness; housing; employment and productive work; [and] social safety net provision.”

The Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Zero Hunger Trust Fund was established by an Act of Parliament (Act No 2 of 2016), as a mechanism to “finance the eradication of hunger in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines”. The ZHTF SVG is funded by a 2% levy on telecommunications.

In the years since its inception, the ZHTF SVG has received contributions from private sector entities and other individuals. The Fund has also received direct project funding from friendly countries and international partners.

Why Tackle Hunger?

Extreme hunger and malnutrition remain barriers to sustainable development and create a trap from which people cannot easily escape. Hunger and malnutrition mean less productive individuals, who are more prone to disease and are often unable to earn more and improve their livelihoods. Nearly 800 million people suffer from hunger worldwide, the vast majority in developing countries.
